Recently, the Ontario government announced the approval to expand 7-Eleven’s alcohol services to all locations across the province by 2025.
Not only that, but the convenience store giant is planning to extend this service to other provinces, including British Columbia.
7-Eleven’s alcohol service launched in 2021 and has since been operating at two Ontario locations, and they have finally been given the green light to expand this service across the province.
They have obtained liquor licenses for nearly all of its 50-plus locations in the province, enabling it to sell beer, wine, cider, and ready-to-drink cocktails.
Customers can enjoy their alcoholic drinks on-site, with the dining areas separated from the rest of the store by a meter-high wall and open daily from noon to 11 p.m. Alternatively, they can make purchases to take away during that time period.
This also follows Ontario’s recent bylaw change to allow convenience stores, supermarkets, and gas stations to begin selling alcohol starting September 5 of this year.
This pivot toward in-store dining and alcohol sales represents 7-Eleven’s strategy to align with the evolving preferences of Canadian consumers. With traditional convenience store products like cigarettes in decline, the chain is taking this opportunity to reinvent its brand and attract a broader customer base.
As part of their cross-Canada expansion, they have also obtained 20 licenses for locations in Alberta, with plans to extend the service to other provinces very soon.
Hopefully, British Columbia and Vancouver are next on their list.
