The Popular Othello Tunnels Finally Reopen After 3 Years

by Amy Huang |

This has left locals waiting in anticipation for their revival, and the wait is finally over!

BC Parks has been working hard on the restoration process over the past few months, paving the way for the beloved tunnels to once again welcome visitors.

The extensive damage means that repairing the entire trail will take a long time. The partial reopening was originally planned for mid-July, however it was then pushed due to unexpected rock instability.

Fortunately, as of August 19th, the repairs have finally been made, and the first part of the tunnel has been reopened to visitors.

The completion of Phase 1 repairs allows for the public to access the first 2 tunnels.

Repairs Phase 1: Entrance to Tunnel 2

The BC Parks has devised a phased approach to reopening the Othello Tunnels. Efforts in this phase are focused on repairing the rock slope and maintaining the tunnel for the trail.

This work ensures the safety of the trail and also helps reduce the risk of future flood damage. To stabilize the rocks and prevent similar weather damage, a levee, along with steel bars and mesh, are being added.

Repairs Phase 2: Full Trail Repairs

Looking ahead, phase two of the repairs promises the complete restoration of the Othello Tunnels. They anticipate that the trail will be fully reopened by 2025.

Repairs will include the replacement of the first bridge with a modern single span bridge. However, the timing of phase two depends on strategic considerations such as the impact on fish habitats, and environmental sustainability.
